Disaster & Emergency Preparedness
It can happen any time of the day, any time of the year. Disasters and Emergencies are stressful enough, but not having a plan is a plan that will fail. 

Being prepared is key. To keep your family safe, all types of emergencies should be planned for. Get informed. Your local or state emergency management office can provide you with the types of emergencies that are most likely in the area. Find out when you should shelter-in-place and when you should leave in an emergency. 

Prepare Now 
Understand when to stay and when to evacuate. Prepare your home for sheltering-in-place. Know what to do whether you’re at home or away. Follow these tips for each disaster:
  • Tornadoes - If you live in a mobile home, seek other shelter. In non-mobile homes, choose the basement or a room on the lowest floor. The room should have the fewest windows as possible.
  • Chemical Incidents - Choose a room on the highest floor possible, with the fewest windows as possible.
  • Earthquakes - Plan places in every room to take shelter. Look for a sturdy table or desk you can get underneath or an inside wall to stand against, away from glass.
  • 72 Hours on Your Own - Plan on being self-sufficient for the first 72 hours after a disaster or emergency. Build your emergency kit today. Store supplies with care in a cool, dry place that is easy to get to. Regularly replace items that can expire. Include:
    • One gallon of water person per day, plus extra for pets
    • Non-perishable food, such as crackers, granola bars, and ready-to-eat meats, vegetables, fruits, and juices (choose pull-top cans or include a nonelectric can opener)
    • Medical supplies and medications
    • Personal supplies including hygiene items, blankets, and extra clothes
    • General supplies including a battery-powered radio or NOAA weather radio, a flashlight, extra batteries, and a pail with a lid (for an emergency toilet)
    • IDs, banking records, a list of belongings, a list of emergency contacts, and cash
